Mudira and Vazha koombu thoran

  • Mudira (horse gram) – 1 cup
  • Vazha Koombu (banana Flower) – 1 No
  • Shallots – 8 Nos
  • Coconut Oil- 2 table spoon
  • Dry Red chilli- 2 Nos
  • Red Chilli powder-1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves -2 sprig.


  1. Dry roast the Mudira in a low flame till we get a nice roasted smell, stir continuously. Remove from stove let it cool. Rinse 2-3 times and place in cooker, add 1 cup water, ¼ tsp turmeric, ¼ tsp chilli powder and salt and cook for 3-4 whistle.
  2.  Take the Vazha koombu, discard first 2-3 lose and hard outer coverings, shred it into small pieces. This should be kept in water for few minutes, wash well. Take a vessel or a pan add the shredded Vazha koombu to it along with ¼ tsp chilli, ¼ turmeric powder, salt to taste and little water. Cover and cook in medium flame. It should be cooked well, and there should be no water present in the vegetable.
  3.  Take a pan, add coconut oil. When the oil is hot add chopped shallots, red chilies broken into 2 pieces and curry leaves. When the shallot’s colour changes, add cooked Mudira and Vazha koombu and mix well. Add salt if necessary. Let it cook on low flame. All the water present inside should dry, Sauté for few minutes. Grated coconut can be added to this if needed. Serve with rice or Kanzhi.
