  1. Onions -2-3 nos chopped
  2. Asafetida( Kayam or hing)- ½ tsp
  3. Tamarind- 1 small piece
  4. Red chili- 3-4 Nos
  5. Curry leaves-1sprig
  6. Oil- 1 table spoon


  1. Heat a pan add oil, when it is hot add onions, red chili, tamarind piece, curry leaves and asafetida till it is soft and light brown colour.
  2. On cooling add salt and grind it into smooth paste in a blender.
  3. Serve it with dosa or idli.

* The chutney will be tastier if we can use shallot (small onion) instead of onions.
