Navara rice is one of the many types of rice found in India, There seems to have been about a hundred varieties of rice but only about 20 types are said to be existing. Navara is one of the 20.

Navara also has religious significance and is sometimes used in temples for ceremonies.

Rice has been used as a medicine by traditional healers from time immemorial. widely used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine,

Navara has been used traditionally to remedy the ills of the respiratory,circulatory,digestive and nervous systems in the panchakarma treatment of Ayurveda.  Navarakizhi and Navaratheppu are the two major treatments in Ayurveda for conditions such as  arthritis,paralysis,neurological disorders,degeneration of muscles and tuberculosis .

Boiled Navara is a good weaning food for infants, particularly those with low weight. Broth made by adding Navara rice to meat is recommended to pregnant women as it increases the weight of the foetus. Cooked with milk and herbs, it can treat internal wounds.

Ingredients:

  1. Navara rice 2 cups
  2. Jaggery 4 pieces
  3. Sago ½ cup
  4. Salt 1 pinch
  5. Water 2 cups
  6. Coconut grated ½ cup
  7. Dry ginger powder ½ spoon
  8. Cardamom powder 1 spoon

Preparation:

Wash navara rice and cook in water with a pinch of salt and when boil, add grated coconut and sago and Cook till water become reduced. Add jaggery solution and dry ginger powder and cardamom powder. Cook in low flame.
