Curry Leaves Chutney

  • 1 cup curry leaves or Veppila
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds/jeera
  • ½ inch ginger/ adrak
  • 1 or 2 green chilies
  • ½ cup grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp roasted chana dal (optional)
  • a pinch of asafoetida/hing
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt as required



  • 1. Rinse and dry the curry leaves with a clean kitchen towel.
  • 2. Heat oil in a frying pan. then add mustard seeds and urad dal.
  • 3. Allow the mustard seeds to pop and the urad dal to get a reddish brown.
  • 4. Add the cumin seeds. then add the ginger, green chilies and curry leaves.
  • 5. Stir and fry the leaves with continuous stirrings till they become slightly crisp.
  • 6. don’t brown them as this would make the chutney bitter.
  • 7. Add the curry leaves mixture with some salt and water in a grinder.
  • 9. Add the grated coconut and roasted chana dal.
  • 10. Grind all the ingredients to a smooth chutney.
  • 11. Pour in a serving bowl and serve the curry leaves chutney with Dosa or Idly
